Elephant Seal

The scientific name of the elephant seal is Mirounga, which sounds aptly like the chilled-out greeting one seal would use to another. Both species of elephant seal are huge, with males maxing out at 20 feet and 4.5 tons; however, they do their lounging in very different locales. Northern seals adore the vibes of California and Baja California, while their less touristy cousins the southern seals live in sub-Antarctic and Antarctic waters. During breeding season, male seals use their good looks to collect a harem of up to 50 females. Once a year, the California State Park of San Simeon Beach hosts up to 18,000 elephant seals crowded onto a 4-mile stretch of beach, accompanied by such a racket of bellows and grunts, you’d think you’d stumbled onto the losing tryouts for America’s Got Talent.
